Ingredients:
- 1 pound (454g) breakfast sausage, removed from casings (if applicable)
- ¼ cup (30g) all-purpose flour
- 3 cups (710ml) whole milk
- 1 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground preferred
- ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
- Pinch of red pepper flakes for extra heat (optional)
Instructions:
- Crumble the sausage into the skillet over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until browned and cooked through. Drain off any excess grease, leaving about 2 tablespoons in the pan.
- Reduce the heat to medium-low. Sprinkle the flour over the sausage. Cook, stirring constantly with a whisk, for 1-2 minutes.
- Slowly pour in the milk, whisking continuously to prevent lumps from forming.
- Bring the gravy to a simmer, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to low and continue to simmer, stirring frequently, until the gravy has thickened to your desired consistency (about 5-10 minutes).
- Stir in the salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Serve immediately. The perfect sausage gravy recipe is ready!
