Ingredients:

  • 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (240ml) warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp / 7g) instant yeast
  • 2 tbsp (25g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp (6g) salt
  • 2 tbsp (30ml) vegetable oil
  • Optional: 1 egg + 1 tbsp water for egg wash
  • Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy. Add flour, salt, and vegetable oil.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Punch down the dough, divide into 8 pieces, and shape each into a round bun.
  5. Place buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment, cover, and proof for 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Score each bun with a star shape using a sharp knife.
  7. Optional: whisk egg and water, brush over buns.
  8. Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
  9. Cool buns on wire rack before serving.
