Ingredients:

  • 5 ounces (140g) canned tuna in water or oil, drained
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) finely chopped celery
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) finely chopped red onion
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1.25ml) black pepper
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 slices of bread (sourdough, rye, or white)
  • 1 tablespoon (15g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2-3 slices (50-75g) of cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or provolone)

Instructions:

  1. Combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, celery, red onion, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl. Gently mix until well combined.
  2. Spread the tuna salad evenly on one slice of bread. Top with the cheese slices. Place the other slice of bread on top.
  3. Spread softened butter evenly on the outside of the top slice of bread. Repeat with the bottom slice of bread.
  4. Place the sandwich in a preheated skillet or on a griddle pan over medium heat, buttered-side down.
  5. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey. Use a spatula to gently press down on the sandwich while cooking to ensure even browning and melting.
  6. Remove from skillet and serve hot.
