Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) sirloin steak, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (cornflour)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (low sodium)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (about 1 teaspoon)
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (about 2 teaspoons)
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) honey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (low sodium)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a bit of a kick!)
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Sesame seeds (optional)
  • Chopped green onions (scallions) (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Combine marinade ingredients in a bowl. Add beef cubes, toss to coat, and marinate for at least 30 minutes (or up to 2 hours) in the refrigerator.
  2. Whisk together glaze ingredients in a medium bowl and set aside.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Remove beef from marinade (reserving the marinade) and pat dry. Toss the beef in cornstarch to coat lightly.
  4. Add beef to the hot skillet in a single layer (work in batches if needed). Sear until browned on all sides (about 5-7 minutes total). Don't overcrowd the pan!
  5. Reduce heat to medium. Pour reserved marinade and then the glaze into the skillet.
  6. Cook, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens and coats the beef (about 3-5 minutes). Ensure beef is cooked through.
  7. Remove from heat. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions (if using). Serve immediately.
