Ingredients:
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup (60 g) breadcrumbs (preferably seasoned)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons (30 g) unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon (15 g) all-purpose flour
- 1 cup (240 ml) beef broth
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, onion, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined; avoid overmixing. Shape the mixture into four equal patties.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 5-7 minutes on each side, until browned and cooked to desired doneness (approximately 160°F/70°C for medium).
- Remove patties from the skillet, leaving drippings. Melt butter in the same skillet over medium heat; sprinkle in flour, whisking to make a roux. Gradually add beef broth while whisking, ensuring there are no lumps. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, salt, and pepper; simmer until thickened (about 5 minutes).
- Return the patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over, and heat through for 2-3 minutes.
- Plate the hamburger steaks with a generous helping of gravy and enjoy!
