Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs lean ground beef
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, and seasonings. Gently shape the mixture into 6 oval patties.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a 12-inch cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 3–5 minutes per side until a deep mahogany crust forms. Remove patties and set aside on a plate.
  3. Reduce heat to medium. Add butter to the same skillet and, once foaming, sauté the sliced onions for 5–7 minutes until translucent.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 2 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste.
  5. Slowly whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce until the gravy reaches a velvety consistency.
  6. Return the seared patties to the pan. Simmer on low for 10 minutes, spooning gravy over the meat until the internal temperature reaches 160°F.
