Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (120g) glutinous rice flour
  • 1/4 cup (30g) powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup (80ml) water
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) vegetable oil
  • A few drops of black food coloring (optional)
  • 1 cup (100g) roasted black sesame seeds
  • 1/4 cup (30g) powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) honey or maple syrup (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Black Sesame Filling: Toast the black sesame seeds until fragrant. Grind the toasted seeds until fine using a food processor. Mix ground sesame with powdered sugar, vegetable oil, and honey until a smooth paste forms. Divide into 8 equal portions and roll into balls. Refrigerate.
  2. Make the Snow Skin Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine glutinous rice flour and powdered sugar. Gradually add water and vegetable oil, mixing until smooth. Optionally, add a few drops of black food coloring for a distinct look. Cover and let rest for 30 minutes.
  3. Assemble the Mooncakes: Divide the rested dough into 8 equal pieces. Flatten a piece of dough and encase a ball of black sesame filling in the center. Pinch to seal. Dust with additional glutinous rice flour if sticky and mold into shape (using molds if desired).
  4. Steam the Mooncakes: Prepare a steamer lined with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Steam the mooncakes over boiling water for about 10 minutes. Allow to cool before serving.
