Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (226 grams) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 4 cups (480 grams) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2-4 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • Pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Soften butter to room temperature (do not melt).
  2. Sift powdered sugar to eliminate lumps.
  3. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter using an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy and light in color (about 2 minutes).
  4. Gradually add sifted powdered sugar, mixing on low speed to prevent clouds of sugar until incorporated.
  5. Add vanilla extract and a pinch of salt (if using), then mix again until fully combined.
  6. Add heavy cream or milk one tablespoon at a time, mixing until desired consistency is reached.
  7. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. Taste the icing and adjust sweetness or flavor as desired.
  8. Use immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes, or store in an airtight container.
