Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (30 ml)
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped (about 1 cup) (150 g)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced (about 2 teaspoons) (6 g)
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (or more, to taste) (2g)
- 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes (794 g)
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce (425 g)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano (2g)
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil (1g)
- 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped (optional, for garnish) (6g)
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar (5g)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste (5g)
Instructions:
- Heat olive oil in the saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened and translucent. Add minced garlic and red pepper flakes, and cook for another minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce. Stir well to combine.
- Add the dried oregano, dried basil, sugar, salt, and pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cover. Cook, stirring occasionally, for at least 30 minutes, or up to an hour for a richer flavor.
- Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning as needed. Add more salt, pepper, or red pepper flakes to your liking.
- If using, stir in the fresh basil. Serve hot over your favorite pasta, pizza, or other dishes.
