Ingredients:

  • 6 cups (approx. 900g) Fresh Apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced 1/4 inch thick
  • 1/2 cup (100g) Granulated Sugar
  • 1 tbsp (8g) Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp (15ml) Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 tsp (3g) Ground Nutmeg
  • 1 box (15.25 oz / 432g) Yellow or White Cake Mix
  • 3/4 cup (170g) Unsalted Butter, melted or very thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup (50g) Light Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 cup (50g) Chopped Pecans (Optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with the granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Let them sit for 5 minutes until the apples look glossy and have released a small amount of juice. Pour the mixture into the bottom of your greased baking dish, spreading them into an even layer.
  2. Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the top of the fruit. Use a spatula to ensure the powder covers the apples completely in an even, powdery layer. Do not stir the mix into the apples; keeping the layers separate is vital for the cobbler texture.
  3. Pour the melted butter slowly over the entire surface, or place thin pats of butter to cover as much of the dry mix as possible. Sprinkle with brown sugar and optional nuts. Bake for 45 minutes until the fruit is bubbling around the edges and the topping is a deep golden-brown and firm to the touch.
