Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups whole milk, warmed
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter until it starts to foam.
  2. Add the flour to the melted butter and whisk continuously for 2-3 minutes until golden.
  3. Gradually pour in the warmed milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps.
  4. Continue whisking over medium heat until the sauce thickens (about 8-10 minutes).
  5. Stir in the nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Adjust seasoning as needed.
  6. If using, stir in grated Parmesan cheese until melted and incorporated.
  7. Remove from heat and let cool briefly before layering in your lasagne.
