Ingredients:

  • 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced (approximately 700g / 1.5 lbs)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g / 1.75 oz)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (15g / 0.5 oz)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (5g / 0.17 oz)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (0.5g / 0.02 oz)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (15 ml / 0.5 fl oz)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces (28g / 1 oz)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (120g / 4.2 oz)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (45g / 1.6 oz)
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar (100g / 3.5 oz)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (2.5g / 0.08oz)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (1.5g / 0.05oz)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes (113g / 4 oz)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to coat evenly. Dot with butter pieces.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  3. Using a pastry blender or your fingertips, cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Key visual cue: You should still see small pieces of butter.
  4. Pour the apple filling into the baking dish. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
  5. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly. Doneness Test: Press a fork into the apples to test softness.
  6. Let the crumble cool slightly before serving.
