Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef (or turkey)
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Optional toppings: pickles, cheese, or coleslaw

Instructions:

  1. Finely chop the onion and bell pepper.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add chopped onion and bell pepper; sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add ground beef to the skillet; cook until browned, breaking it up, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  5. Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  6. Reduce heat and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened.
  7. Lightly toast hamburger buns, if desired.
  8. Spoon the sloppy joe filling onto the bottom half of each bun and top with any desired toppings.
  9. Close sandwiches and serve immediately.
