Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 bell pepper, finely chopped
- 1 pound ground beef (or turkey)
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 4 hamburger buns
- Optional toppings: pickles, cheese, or coleslaw
Instructions:
- Finely chop the onion and bell pepper.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add chopped onion and bell pepper; sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add ground beef to the skillet; cook until browned, breaking it up, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Reduce heat and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened.
- Lightly toast hamburger buns, if desired.
- Spoon the sloppy joe filling onto the bottom half of each bun and top with any desired toppings.
- Close sandwiches and serve immediately.
